As a guide the sleep council recommend that most beds should be replaced after 8 to 10 years.
Why buy a new bed?
Independent test house FIRA (Furniture Industry Research Association) confirms materials in many beds can deteriorate by as much as 75% after 10 years.
A bulid up of moisture (we lose more than a quarter of a litre of sweat a night) and skin scales (almost half a kilo of skin is shed over a year) make an old bed a pretty unhygienic environment.
Old beds are also more likely to harbour dust mites and dust mite allergen - a real worry for the UK's growing number of asthma sufferers and also bad for skin conditions such as eczema.
Do you need a new bed?
Simply ask yourself these 10 questions to see whether it's time to change your bed.
Is your bed 10 years old or more?
Do you wake up with neck or backache?
Is the mattress cover torn or stained?
When lying in bed do you feel springs or ridges beneath the surface?
When moving in bed do you hear creaks, crunches or other suspicious noises?
Do you and your partner roll towards each other unintentionally?
Is the bed too small to give an undisturbed night's sleep?
Is the divan or base uneven or sagging?
Are the legs or castors worn?
Would it be embarrassing if the neighbours saw the bed without the covers?
If you answered 'yes' to any of the above questions it might be time you considered a new bed!
