Bed Terms Explained
Here we have compiled some technical information and explain some commonly used terms to help you decide which bed would best suit your requirements.
Platform Top
The Platform Top divan base usually has a solid, lightly padded top which will 'firm up' the feel of the mattress.
Sprung Edge
The Sprung Edge divan base contains a spring unit which softens the feel of the mattress and helps to maintain the mattresses performance.
Sprung Timber Slats
Placing a mattress on a Sprung timber divan base will give you a firmer feel than a Sprung Edge but still give flexible, comfortable support.
Zip and Link
The beds are firmly linked together at head and foot ends by brass linking bars, then the two mattresses are zipped together to provide a Super King Size bed.
Of course, you can always unzip and create two separate beds easily and quickly when needed.
Open Coil
Open coil mattresses use a single piece of interwoven spring steel running throughout the mattress, this enables all the springs to work in unison to support your body during sleep.
Pocket Sprung
Each precision-made coil is carefully wrapped in its own individual soft cloth sleeve which leaves it free to move independently.
They are then nestled under layer after layer of the most luxurious fillings, to ensure you feel unsurpassed comfort.
Visco-elastic or Memory Foam?
Visco-elastic foam was originally developed by NASA to protect astronauts against the effects of extreme g-force during take-off.
More commonly known as Memory Foam, this pressure relieving material responds to body temperature and weight. It slowly moulds to your body's contours, dispersing pressure and providing a superbly comfortable environment.
Natural Latex
Natural Latex offers numerous advantages over traditional sprung mattresses, they give long lasting support with a choice of firmness options.
Latex conforms perfectly to your body contours for superb comfort and back support and is aerated with a well-ventilated interior that dissipates heat and body moisture.
Latex is hypo-allergenic and its anti-microbial properties inhibit the growth of common bacteria and mildew - so it can be particularly beneficial for asthma sufferers.
Mattresses do not need to be turned, as there are little or no subsidiary fillings to settle or pack-down.
Pillow Top
A non-turn mattress which combines either a traditional open coil or pocket sprung mattress with an integrated topper pad layer of visco-elastic memory foam.
Tufted Top
Tufted mattresses are pierced through and buttoned in twenty or more places.
These `tufts` hold all the layers of padding together and tie them in to the spring unit.
The best quality mattresses are virtually always tufted and give a softer more comfortable sleeping surface.
Quilted Top
The top layer of padding (in deep quilted types, the top two layers ) are sewn together as in a quilt.
Depending on price and quality there may also be a layer of padding attached to the spring unit.
What is a Spring Count?
The number of springs in a mattress greatly alters the firmness and support that you get from a bed.
Normally the more springs you have - the better support you will get and more restful nights sleep you will experience.
Spring counts are normally given for the amount of springs in a 5ft mattress.
Non-Turn Mattress
This term describes a mattress that has only one sleeping surface. Mattresses that feature a Pillow Top of layer of Memory Foam or Latex normally have a spring base in the mattress. This would require rotating from head-to-foot and not a complete 'turn'.
Adjustable Beds?
Electrically Adjustable beds are not just for comfort. They can help alleviate circulatory problems and other ailments.
