What is the Card Security Code?
It is the final 3 digits printed over the top of the signature strip, which represents the card security code. For American Express it is a four digit number, typically displayed above the last four digits of the embossed card number on the front of the card.
It is not a PIN and cannot be used at ATM machines. However, unlike a PIN (Personal Identification Number), which you should never tell anyone, you will be asked to quote it together with your full statement address for phone, fax, mail order and internet purchases. The security code should not be disclosed to anyone other than when
you are satisfied that the retailer/issuer is genuine and
when you are positive that you wish to proceed with a purchase
You may also be asked for this number when contacting your card issuer by telephone as extra proof that you are the cardholder.
By supplying the Card Security Code you are providing extra proof that you are the cardholder when you order.
